You Don't Own Me

You don’t own me. This can be forgotten in relationships, especially marriages. A ring does not mean a woman is owned by a man. A ring does not mean a woman's rights disappear. A ring does not mean that a man is entitled to his wife's body. A ring does not mean that sex is consensual. The fight for the rights of women is a constant struggle. Proving that rape is one of those struggles and proving martial rape has proved to be even more of a struggle.
The issue lies in the relationship aspects of the rape. It is difficult to prove martial rape due to the marital relationship. For women like Mandy Boardman, this was the problem. Her heartbreaking testimonial shares how her husband drugged her while she slept in order to sexually assault her.
When she took her case to court the judge who oversaw the case told her that her husband “may have been a crappy husband, but he was a good father and that I should “forgive him.” Her husband received no prison time. It is frustrating and difficult to read these cases. Though the topic is unpleasant it does not mean that these women’s stories should not be told.
Several articles can be seen in the background of the piece either of women's experiences or cases. Some of the text below explains what martial rape is and its importance. The women featured in the center represents the strength and perseverance of those women who have survived.
