Woman, residing alone
Outraged and lynched
Vigilantes committed the crime
[Passers by] found the body,
$60 on [her] person
Not committed by tramps
[The] struggle,
Struggle for her life,
Had been a hard one
Bedding scattered
Clothing, torn
Shoes removed
Surprised by lynchers
Outraged
Before she was strung up
Premeditated and dastardly
This poem, created from a news article in The Record Union, about a woman, Mrs. W.T. Holton, who was raped (outraged) and lynched on her ranch, and near her home in Butte, Nebraska in March of 1895. She was attacked by multiple men titled as "rustlers," and some believe that she was involved with them in some way, and the murder/outrage was perhaps revenge of sorts. She was later found alone by a couple of people walking near her ranch. At the time of the article, no suspects had been named.
