By John Meyer
They violated the sanctity of my home
Their ambitions are cold and actions hurtful
The fear takes over, and my mind goes black
My face to the floor, I describe my assailants
Two of them, hateful and horrific
I look up to see confusion, and sorrow
The Woman is an immoral character
She cannot speak English, and
Her unsupported testimony was all there was
The words, they fell on deaf ears
To me they fell like stones
I know, I will never breathe easy again
In the article and poem, the victim is a Mexican-American woman, who is raped and abused by two assailants. When she recovers from her ordeal, the attorney states that they cannot prosecute the two men for the crime. The reason why they will not prosecute the men for rape is because the woman has an "immoral character" and she does "not speak English." One of the men is still on the run, but the other was already brought in. He pleaded guilty to assault and spent 90 days in jail.
