My collage is about sexual harassment in the workforce after the civil right movement. The feminism of women associated with NOW took inspiration from the civil rights movement and it was rooted in the early 1960s activism that had focused on women's employment rights. Back in those days, women's voices had always been slighted. Especially when women working with other male colleagues, their opinions often were ignored.
Women began to speak out against sexual harassment at work. Eleanor Holmes Norton was the first woman to stand out and was part of The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission. Norton crafted the first set of guidelines to define sexual harassment in the workplace.
The painting piece is about the stresses that women hold on their back. Family, Equal Rights, Fair Pay, Job Opportunity, etc. The 1970s was the beginning of the women's right movement. The definition of sexual harassment was unclear at that time. Women still have to face the stresses between family and workplace.
