While conducting my research, I came across many newspaper articles that concerned the sexual assault of children and younger women. I was inspired to create this collage/poem. I titled the poem "One of Too Many," to represent the large amount of painful accounts I came across while doing my research. I describe four stories, from four different newspaper articles in my poem, all from the 1950's. I go through each article by order of the age of the victim in my poem. The first is the account of a three year old girl from Washington D.C. in 1951, she was sexually assaulted by her babysitter. The second article was actually directly underneath the first story in the newspaper that I found both in. It details a five-year old girl that was raped by a man who was hired as a handyman in her home, this also occurred in Washington D.C. The third article is from a newspaper in 1955, it tells the story of a 15-year old girl that lived in North Carolina, she was date-raped. The final story I included is from a newspaper from 1959, in Florida. It is about the violent rape of a 19-year old black girl, her attackers were four white men. My project represents the stories of young girls and children, those you would not think had much of a voice when their assault occurred, especially the young children.
