My collage consists of excerpts from newspaper articles ranging from the early 1900's to 1950's. It showcases the views of women in those times that she should stay at home and be a housewife. That their role was to be a wife, raise her kids and cook and clean the house. Some that may be to difficult to read say, "The most valuable citizen in the world is the woman who stays at home and properly brings up a family of children." Referring to being a housewife, " But her career is the most important one a woman can choose." It is evident that women were seen as inferior to man, that their work was to "stay at home" and they should be fulfilled by that. Even though women began to work in factories or other necessary professions during WWI and WWII, their main responsibility still remained their homes. There were not many advances for women, one began with the right to vote with the 19th amendment in 1920, but they still were not see as equal. To this day women and men are not valued equally. One clear example of this is the difference in pay for women and men in the same job. Even with more women in the work field, the job of the house and taking care of the children is still put upon many women. With the creation of this project I hope to shed light on the views that continue to transcend generations instead of progressing forward to equality.
