Off the Train
By Jacob Snelgrove
The sun seeped through the clouds
I took a seat waiting to reach Tennessee
When I hear footsteps getting loud
The conductor stands above me
I am confused on what I hear
I must switch seats because I am not white
Since I am black they have fear
They say I am in the wrong, them in the right
I will not leave my seat
I am not less because of my skin
They kick me off hoping I accept defeat
Except I know I must win
Pulled off like some animal
Three men pulled at me
Acting as if i was irrational
They were the ones who needed to flee
This wasn’t going to be the end
The railroad was in the wrong
Winning the case was a lot to comprehend
It was even harder to be that strong
My story wasn’t over
The supreme court couldn’t let me be
The decision ended with no closure
In the end I felt lost being me
Ida B. Wells is someone we learned about throughout the course and I believe is someone isn't talked about enough. Ever since hearing about her story and facing racism it has stuck with me. Her story resembles that of American heroes like Rosa Parks and Martin Luther King, however we don't hear about Ms. Wells. She was one of the first leaders in the civil rights movement and a founder of NAACP.
I wanted to express the story of Ida B Wells throughout a point of view situation. I know I could never understand the pain and anger that Ms. Wells felt, but I hope to express some truth in my poem.
This story is a very interesting one because after Ms. Wells sued the railroad company she won and was awarded 500$. However, the supreme court decided to overturn the verdict and make Ms. Wells return the money and pay court fines. This type of defeat that clearly was overturned due to racism would most certainly bring anyone's spirits down. But not Wells, she continued to fight on and fight for the rights of all colored people. This is why Wells is a true hero because she fought for what she believed in no matter what the consequences
