The Message of Clothing

Starting this project I jumped all over the place. Going from immigration, to rape, to Japanese internment camps. Finally I settled on something that every women could relate to on a certain level. Clothing. Specifically how people see women.
Throughout history a woman's "worth" has been determined by her clothes. People define a woman by what she wears. Clothing is seen as an identity, a statement. It sends messages, but it is not always the message you want it to send.
A popular notion people attribute to women's clothing is "She was asking for it," meaning the clothing she was wearing is an open invitation for people to grope, abuse and/or rape her. I have looked at an article that outlines several cases in US History where clothing was used as evidence to prove that it was not rape, but consensual sex. In some cases it was dismissed, but in some cases the victim was punished for what she was wearing. Her clothes sent a message, but the message her body sent was that she was only a ""sex object".
The piece I have created captures all the different clothing styles of women under the background of "She was asking for it." A simple message. No matter what she wears she will always ask for it.
