Title IX Didn't Change Much
Title IX. The law that was supposed to change things for women in athletics, it did not. Prior to 1972 when the law was passed, women were rarely allowed to participate in sport and when they were, heavy criticism and harassment came. Men saw women in sport as eye candy, only there to socialize. If they wanted to play, they had to play with the men. The law states at one point, “Under Title IX, discrimination on the basis of sex can include sexual harassment or sexual violence, such as rape, sexual assault, sexual battery, and sexual coercion.” Women were stereotyped and discriminated against for their gender while trying to do something they loved. After 1972, funding continued to be limited, but participation for women in sport was seeing an increase. Women began to fight for equality in sport. Many, especially the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA), pushed back, claiming it will be an embarrassment to impose this law and it will do more harm than good. As Title IX reaches its 50th Anniversary in 2022, women continue to fight the same issues of gender inequality and sexual discrimination in sport while seeing little progress that could be made if people pushed aside their prejudices and help the sports we love.
