This is a black out poem that includes the story from an article by the New York Times on April 25, 1967. The article can be found on page 33 of the newspaper. I chose this story because the location of the rape is what caught my eye. This project shows that women were not safe anywhere. The church is viewed as a place of safety and worship. Those four boys destroyed a place of certainty and God for those girls. While the attackers intent was to rob the church, they raped two young black girls in the process. The newspaper talks about how much money was stolen from the church before they get to what happened to the girls after the kidnap. I also found it interesting how they made a point at the end of the article that the crime was not racially motivated, when they specifically went to a black church during a service.
