The art piece that I have created centers around a criminal case in 1921. The case is of a man being convicted for the raping of a young woman. Unlike most women at the time, she was able to tell her story and get him in prison. He served seven of his ten year sentence, then was discharged back into the public. Upon release, he returned to look for his victim. He stated that he wanted her to pay for locking him away. Therefore, he committed the same horrifying crime against her. This time her screams ignited his fire. He enraged even more than before. Later, he was then placed in prison, for life this time. Despite all this, no one knows who the woman is.
To me, it shows how a rape can follow a victim for life. Despite getting justice in the end, you are left with the fear that it can happen again. This happened in the 1920’s and is still prevalent today. Only so much justice can be served. No one knew who the victim was, yet she walked around with her scars of this experience everyday.
Artistically, I decided to create a blackout piece with this article. I wanted to highlight how heinous he and his actions were, along with how the victim is forgotten. Then I added a silhouette of a woman crying for help, just as she might have done. It shows how victims can scream for help, yet they are left unheard and forgotten about.
