In the 1940s - 1950s black women were being raped by white men and nothing was done. Using Danielle McGuire's article "It Was Like All of Us Were Raped", I was able to form my final project. I wanted to portray a woman's body with hand prints and bruises as these women like Betty Jean Owens, Recy Taylor, Jannie Ligons and many more, were horribly raped by white men. These women hard a hard time speaking uo and if they did, their rapists were usually set free as the jury would be all white. I wanted to show that these women are not for the taking, they are strong minded, strong willed, and powerful women who did not deserve what happened to them.
