I like to write my menage guys as halves of a whole, and Jake is definitely the alpha half of the duo. He and Adam fit together because they're so different. Adam grew up wealthy, and Jake grew up poor. Adam had a disciplined, cold existence growing up, while Jake didn't fit with his bohemian family at all. I liked the idea of two men without families wanting to make their own.
The Dean part of Jacob's name is a nod to Dean from Supernatural , who Jake would probably get along really well with. After all, we know they both like pie.
Neither of the kids that come from the Dean-Miles family are biologically Jake's. That was not the intention, but I thought it would be interesting to put that conflict in there and see what happens. This particular development was addressed in Serena's story - Broke Down in Bliss.
