Malibu
Back in 2017, Chloe and I decided to take a trip to a place we’d always wanted to visit. We were actually going to attend a conference in Anaheim, but we came in early so we could spend a few days in Malibu. I rented a place right on the beach and from the moment we stepped out on the balcony, I knew I was going to set a book in that house on Old Malibu Road. That book eventually became Nobody Does It Better, and the house is Josh’s home on the beach. Like most of the homes on this stretch of beach, it’s built so high tide actually comes up under the home. Sitting on the balcony, it felt like I lived on the water, and I spent so much time there. So does Kay. She loves sitting on the balcony and watching the dolphins play. I think I even worked in the painting on the wall as you walk in. It’s a dachshund surfing. I loved my time there and still adore getting to feel like I’m back there when I re-read or listen to Kay’s story.
I do not know if the home is still standing after the tragic fires in LA. Much of the community was devastated, but the place will remain in my mind, my heart, and my stories forever.
