This is the pivotal book in the first M&M arc, the one that everything else turns on. It introduces the idea of Charlotte and places the characters on what will be the map that leads us to Ian's book. The bad guy makes his big move and the team gets a big shake up. This is also my first London book. It introduces Damon Knight and Simon Weston, who will become very important to the series. But when I think of this book it's the setting that always hits me first. A year before I wrote this book I went on a trip and stayed for a couple of weeks in London, renting a flat that I based Avery's flat on. It was in the same neighborhood, across from the Liverpool Street Station and yes, I spent many a day in the British Museum. This was the first time I'd really used my travel in a book. But not the last.
Let's talk about Simon. He wasn't supposed to be anything more than a dude who flirts with Avery and then he pulled a gun on Damon and the whole story changed. I think until that moment I wasn't sure if Rory was who he turns out to be and I know damn well Charlie didn't exist until that moment. Those line about the meeting in the alley outside of Avery's flat truly changed this series forever. It was in writing Simon that I discovered Ian's past. This is the book Ian becomes more human for me. Up until now he feels like a basic alpha hole, a sexy beast with a sarcastic mouth but after this he is more complex, more real.
