Jensen, Texas Sirens
Naming characters can really set a tone when you’re writing a book. I have fun naming characters for the most part. Now you get 100+ books in and you need to get creative when you’re dealing with your main characters, and let me tell you it’s easier to name the women than the men since a lot of my books are why choose, so they have more than one hero.
Sometimes I name a character because I just like the name. Sometimes, it’s an homage, as it was with Jensen Wiley, one of the heroes of The Reluctant Siren. So let’s talk about the man he’s named for—one of my all-time crushes, Jensen Ackles.
I’m an old-school Ackles fan. I remember when he had another sibling named Sam. I loved Days of Our Lives in the eighties and nineties, and Jensen played Eric Brady, twin to Sami Brady, the soap’s resident bad girl at the time. I actually think she might have caused more trouble than Sam Winchester.
Fast forward to a few years later and as a person who loves anything paranormal, Supernatural premieres and I fall in love all over again. I always preferred Dean—yes, Jake Dean’s last name is another homage since Jake and Adam remind me of Sam and Dean. Is he problematic at times? Oh boy, yes. He’s damaged and still can’t let go of his injured inner child. He has daddy issues, abandonment issues, a hero complex. And I adore him.
So he’s the inspiration for my chaotic, a little problematic at times, revenge-seeking hero Jensen Wiley.
I hope the real Jensen would approve.
