Beyonce's Halo and Steal the Day
Sometimes I find a song that sparks an image that becomes a scene. And sometimes I write the scene and then the song becomes the soundtrack, as with a scene in Thieves. In Steal the Day, Zoey and Dev get attacked by cultists who are both oddly religious—they believe Dev is an angel—and super into demons. Unfortunately for them they discover the demon they call isn’t all that interested in their okra crops flourishing and the scene ends with the demon actually helping Zoey and Dev. I use the word “helping” in the most demonic way. So they’re left with a bloodbath and the cops on the way. Zoey knows she should run, but Dev is incapacitated. So she climbs on the altar and wraps her arms around him and lets herself be taken in with him. It’s the moment that cements Dev’s place in Zoey’s heart, and this is the perfect song for the scene—and for a book about angels.
