Hebrews 8:1-13
The High Priest of a New Covenant
1 Now the main point of what we are saying is this: We do have such a high priest, who sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven, 2 and who serves in the sanctuary, the true tabernacle set up by the Lord, not by a mere human being.
3 Every high priest is appointed to offer both gifts and sacrifices, and so it was necessary for this one also to have something to offer. 4 If he were on earth, he would not be a priest, for there are already priests who offer the gifts prescribed by the law. 5 They serve at a sanctuary that is a copy and shadow of what is in heaven. This is why Moses was warned when he was about to build the tabernacle: “See to it that you make everything according to the pattern shown you on the mountain.” 6 But in fact the ministry Jesus has received is as superior to theirs as the covenant of which he is mediator is superior to the old one, since the new covenant is established on better promises.
7 For if there had been nothing wrong with that first covenant, no place would have been sought for another. 8 But God found fault with the people and said:
“The days are coming, declares the Lord,
when I will make a new covenant
with the people of Israel
and with the people of Judah.
9 It will not be like the covenant
I made with their ancestors
when I took them by the hand
to lead them out of Egypt,
because they did not remain faithful to my covenant,
and I turned away from them,
declares the Lord.
10 This is the covenant I will establish with the people of Israel
after that time, declares the Lord.
I will put my laws in their minds
and write them on their hearts.
I will be their God,
and they will be my people.
11 No longer will they teach their neighbor,
or say to one another, ‘Know the Lord,’
because they will all know me,
from the least of them to the greatest.
12 For I will forgive their wickedness
and will remember their sins no more.”
13 By calling this covenant “new,” he has made the first one obsolete; and what is obsolete and outdated will soon disappear.
In Hebrews 8, we encounter one of the most profound shifts in the history of God’s relationship with humanity...The passage begins with a "main point" that serves as the anchor for our faith: we have a High Priest who is not just performing rituals in an earthly building, but who has "sat down at the right hand of the throne of the Majesty in heaven."...This posture of sitting is revolutionary...In the earthly tabernacle, there were no chairs for the priests because their work was never finished...Sacrifice followed sacrifice, day after day...However, Jesus sat down because His work of redemption was completed...He now serves in the "true tabernacle," the heavenly sanctuary set up by the LORD Himself...This teaches us that the earthly system—the gold, the curtains, and the stone altars—was merely a "copy and shadow" of a greater, celestial Divine and Spiritual Reality...Just as Moses was warned to follow the exact pattern shown to him on the mountain, the earthly tabernacle was designed to point us toward the ultimate ministry of Jesus...
The ministry Jesus received is described as "superior" because the covenant He mediates is established on "better promises."...To understand the beauty of this New Covenant, we must look at why the first one was set aside...The author of Hebrews is careful to note that God "found fault with the people," not necessarily with the Law itself...The first covenant, given after the Exodus, relied on human faithfulness to external regulations...Unfortunately, the people "did not remain faithful," and as a result, the relationship was fractured...The New Covenant, however, shifts the focus from human effort to Divine initiation...Instead of laws written on tablets of stone that people struggle to obey from the outside in, God promises, "I will put My laws in their minds and write them on their hearts."...This is a fundamental change in the human condition; it is a spiritual heart transplant where the desire to do God’s will is woven into our very nature...
One of the most comforting aspects of Hebrews 8 for today's followers is the promise of universal, personal intimacy with God...Under the old system, the average person had to rely on a priest or a neighbor to mediate their standing with God...There was a hierarchy of "knowing" the LORD...But in this New Covenant, God declares that "they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest."...This intimacy is made possible by the finality of God's Grace: "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more."...In the earthly sanctuary, the blood of bulls and goats served as a constant reminder of sin...Every year, the Day of Atonement brought those sins back to the forefront...But through our High Priest in the true tabernacle, sin is not just covered; it is forgotten by God...This forgiveness is the foundation upon which the "better promises" are built, allowing us to draw near to Him without the baggage of our past failures...
Finally, Hebrews 8 teaches us about the progression of God's redemptive plan...By calling this covenant "new," God has officially made the first one "obsolete."...Like an old garment that has served its purpose but is now worn out, the old system was designed to disappear once the reality—Jesus—arrived...This gives us great confidence in our walk with Christ today...We are not living under a "renovated" version of the old law, but under a completely different administration of God's Grace...The "true tabernacle" where Jesus intercedes for us is not restricted by geography or human weakness...Whether we are reading the Word in our homes, praying in a room with large windows overlooking a quiet morning, or working hard to improve our strength and velocity in our daily tasks, we are connected to the heavenly Majesty...
For followers of Jesus, the message of Hebrews 8 is one of total assurance...We have a Mediator who doesn't just represent us; He transforms us...We no longer have to worry if we are "keeping up" with a shadow; we are walking with the Substance...The New Covenant ensures that our relationship with God is secure because it rests on the "indestructible life" and the "better promises" of a High Priest who has already finished the work...As we reflect on these truths, we can find the same kind of discipline and focus that us in our journey through life, knowing that our spiritual growth is fueled by a God who has already written His LOVE on our hearts and promised to be our God forever...This is the better hope that allows us to live with peace, knowing our sins are remembered no more...
