Hebrews 2:1
Being Aware of Our Faith
1 We must pay the most careful attention, therefore, to what we have heard, so that we do not drift away.
The author of Hebrews recognized that our faith can drift from us...Therefore, once we get faith it is not fixed and constant...It is not always something that will stay with us...The author says that we must pay careful attention to what we have heard, so we do not drift away from this Truth we have heard and read about...The mind and our memory can forget they sometimes forget even the important things...The mind can drift off and drift away from beliefs and thoughts we have...The mind can drift away from other things...We read about and see that we often drift away from our high school and college friends...We also can drift away from our spouses over time...We can drift away from these once important relationships...So we can drift away over time from those we love...And we not have ever expected that we would or drift from some of the ones we have been so close to...
We must remember this drifting can happen not only with those around us, but we can drift from God...Drifting can happen with our faith...We must learn to hold on to our faith...We must exercise and use our faith...We must pay attention to our faith...There is much danger when we neglect our faith...The mind and our faith needs nurturing...The world, our jobs, our needs, temptations can move us away from faith slowly...So we must be vigilant and on guard to our drifting mind...
Faith is not a static thing...Faith is more like a process...I agree with C. S. Lewis when he wrote that "We have to be continually reminded of what we believe. Neither this belief nor any other will automatically remain alive in the mind...It must be fed...And as a matter of fact, if you examined a hundred people who had lost their faith in Christianity, I wonder how many of them would turn out to have reasoned out of it by honest argument?...Do not most people simply drift away?"...
And for me this drifting faith concept, means faith needs to grow...Faith may grow gradually and it may grow in fits and starts...If one's faith stays in the exact same place day in and day out, week in and week out and year in and year out, and does not move forward and grow stronger, it has a chance to drift from us...A mature faith wants to seek out the LORD as much as possible...A mature faith is always thinking about and studying his Bible, and finding resources in others and study guides to build up his faith...
So, like Lewis states, I do think our faith can drift, and it can drift gradually over a period of time...And this drifting can be caused by a number of things...The drifting can be caused when we are always to busy, by our jobs, by our grumbling and complaining and our focus on other things, by our thinking about our personal health, by a desire we want, by a temptation we think we cannot do without, and by many other things...Sometimes we are trying to find ourselves and what we are about, instead of trying to find Him...The things that make us drift from God and His Son need to be recognized...We need also to be on guard for a gradual drifting of our faith...And the quicker we recognize the things that make us drift from Him the better...Then we can work and pray to correct them...Lewis says faith must be fed...We must remember our faith gets its nourishment from prayer, the Bible, the church, the Bread of Life, and the things that are Sacred and Holy...And the regular praising and thanking our Father and His Son also helps our faith from drifting...
Each day we must feed our faith...Every morning is a good time...Before going to bed is another good time...Praying and studying about God helps clear the mind...If we don't give our faith some time each day we can lose it...Faith and our spiritual muscles needs regular strengthening...We need to seek God each day, and set time out to read our Bible to prevent our drifting...Faith is personal...Faith is a personal relationship with God and His Son...Faith should be personal...If your faith is not personal, then your faith will easily drift when something different enters your life, that you have an interest in...Our faith can drift if we do not value our faith as much as we should...If we think that faith is not an important part of your life, then other things which one has given a higher priority will take precedence...Your personal belief system should believe that Jesus is the Absolute Truth and He was sent to us by His Father completely out of LOVE...By believing in this Truth, it can help make your faith more personal...
We must be aware that our faith needs to be consciously looked at on a regular basis...And by regularly studying the Bible, going to church, listening to other Christians helps us from drifting away from our LORD..
