Hebrews 7:11-28
Jesus Like Melchizedek
11If perfection could have been attained through the Levitical priesthood (for on the basis of it the law was given to the people), why was there still need for another priest to come—one in the order of Melchizedek, not in the order of Aaron? 12For when there is a change of the priesthood, there must also be a change of the law. 13He of whom these things are said belonged to a different tribe, and no one from that tribe has ever served at the altar. 14For it is clear that our Lord descended from Judah, and in regard to that tribe Moses said nothing about priests. 15And what we have said is even more clear if another priest like Melchizedek appears, 16one who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life. 17For it is declared:
"You are a priest forever,
in the order of Melchizedek."
18The former regulation is set aside because it was weak and useless 19(for the law made nothing perfect), and a better hope is introduced, by which we draw near to God.
20And it was not without an oath! Others became priests without any oath, 21but he became a priest with an oath when God said to him:
"The Lord has sworn
and will not change his mind:
'You are a priest forever.' " 22Because of this oath, Jesus has become the guarantee of a better covenant.
23Now there have been many of those priests, since death prevented them from continuing in office; 24but because Jesus lives forever, he has a permanent priesthood. 25Therefore he is able to save completely those who come to God through him, because he always lives to intercede for them.
26Such a high priest meets our need—one who is holy, blameless, pure, set apart from sinners, exalted above the heavens. 27Unlike the other high priests, he does not need to offer sacrifices day after day, first for his own sins, and then for the sins of the people. He sacrificed for their sins once for all when he offered himself. 28For the law appoints as high priests men who are weak; but the oath, which came after the law, appointed the Son, who has been made perfect forever.
The Priest Melchizedek is mentioned often in the Book of Hebrews...Melchizedek was also the King of Salem, also known as Jerusalem...
Abraham meets Melchizedek, after he (Abraham) rescues his nephew Lot...Lot was living in Sodom at the time (of his rescue)...A big battle for Sodom took place with nine kings involved, and Lot was part of the capture...
After Abraham is victorious in his battle to rescue Lot, he meets Melchizedek...King Melchizedek and priest of our God Most High tells Abraham that he is blessed by God Most High...He then praises our God Most High for Abraham's victory...Abraham gives Melchizedek a tenth of everything of the spoils to our God Most High...This is the first mention of tithing and ten percent in the Bible (Genesis 14:18-20)...
Melchizedek and Abraham were before Moses and the Law...They were also before the Levi Priests and the twelve tribes (the twelve sons of Jacob) of Israel (Genesis 49:28)... So the Hebrew author mentions that of the twelve tribes of Israel the priest line was from Levi...However, Jesus came from the tribe of Judah... Moses had said nothing about a priest coming from the line or tribe of Judah...
This Levitical line of priests were human...Therefore, this priest lineage was limited to what they could do...For people wanting to get close and closer to God, they had to bring a sacrifice to a Levi priest for their sins...This sacrifice helped man get closer to God...
For God's plan to work, it needed to be perfect...God breaks away from the Levi line and gives us a Perfect Priest, and His Son... Jesus would be the Perfect Priest and the perfect sacrifice for our sins...Jesus was resurrected by God and lives forever...The old Levitical priest lineage have died...The old High Priest, could not even save themselves from dying...But since Jesus was resurrected and still lives, He is our permanent High Priest...He has overcame death...
This High Priest is sinless, blameless, pure and holy...Mosaic Law appointed sinful men to represent the country as the High Priest...Now Jesus is the Son of God and perfect forever...If you believe in God's plan, then you are assured that Jesus is here during our sufferings, during our troubles and grieving, as well as here during our times of prosperity... And He will be here for our final hour and judgment day...Praise be to our God Most High...
