Matthew 5:1-6
Introduction to the Sermon on the Mount
1 Now when Jesus saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him, 2 and he began to teach them.
He said:
3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit,
for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
4 Blessed are those who mourn,
for they will be comforted.
5 Blessed are the meek,
for they will inherit the earth.
6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness,
for they will be filled.
Hebrews 6:17-20
The Hope in God is the Anchor to the Soul
17 Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. 18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope set before us may be greatly encouraged. 19 We have this hope as an anchor for the soul, firm and secure. It enters the inner sanctuary behind the curtain, 20 where our forerunner, Jesus, has entered on our behalf. He has become a high priest forever, in the order of Melchizedek.
In Jesus first Sermon to His Disciples and those first following Him, He taught about the poor in spirit, those who mourn, those who are meek, and those who hunger for righteousness...
We learn throughout the gospels, Jesus was always trying to help the helpless...Jesus definitely was one supporting those who were poor in spirit, the emotionally spent, the mentally sick, those physically ill, those who were hurting, and the broken individual...He never ever departed from these groups and thus by Him never leaving their side or their minds, He will forever have them in their hearts...He forever gave them an anchor for their soul that clings to His Hope...
Jesus' wisdom makes me wonder with amazement...His teachings to His followers confound me...Who, but Him has sought out these groups to teach, so they could learn about life and reality?...His helping the helpless, and forgiving the unforgivable, and His love for His enemy shocks me...Yet, His teachings live on and on and will never die, because they are the very nature of life and love and mercy...They are the reality of life as it should be and can be and one day will be...
