Hebrews 10:1-18
Jesus' Sacrifice Once and for All
1 The law is only a shadow of the good things that are coming—not the realities themselves. For this reason it can never, by the same sacrifices repeated endlessly year after year, make perfect those who draw near to worship. 2 Otherwise, would they not have stopped being offered? For the worshipers would have been cleansed once for all, and would no longer have felt guilty for their sins. 3 But those sacrifices are an annual reminder of sins.4 It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins.
5 Therefore, when Christ came into the world, he said:
“Sacrifice and offering you did not desire,
but a body you prepared for me;
6 with burnt offerings and sin offerings
you were not pleased.
7 Then I said, ‘Here I am—it is written about me in the scroll—
I have come to do your will, my God.’”
8 First he said, “Sacrifices and offerings, burnt offerings and sin offerings you did not desire, nor were you pleased with them”—though they were offered in accordance with the law. 9 Then he said, “Here I am, I have come to do your will.” He sets aside the first to establish the second. 10 And by that will, we have been made holy through the sacrifice of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
11 Day after day every priest stands and performs his religious duties; again and again he offers the same sacrifices, which can never take away sins. 12 But when this priest had offered for all time one sacrifice for sins, he sat down at the right hand of God, 13 and since that time he waits for his enemies to be made his footstool. 14 For by one sacrifice he has made perfect forever those who are being made holy.
15 The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this. First he says:
16 “This is the covenant I will make with them
after that time, says the Lord.
I will put my laws in their hearts,
and I will write them on their minds.”
17 Then he adds:
“Their sins and lawless acts
I will remember no more.”
18 And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary.
Romans 10:9-10
Confess to God that You are a Sinner
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.
Psalms 32:5
Confess Your Sins to God
5 Then I acknowledged my sin to you and did not cover up my iniquity. I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the Lord.” And you forgave the guilt of my sin.
Acts 4:12
Salvation is Found in Only Jesus
12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.
Jesus sacrifice on the cross atones for out sins...He is the Son of God, and it took His death on the cross to atone for all of our sins...God, being God, could have accepted another type of sacrifice, like a burnt offering, or an animal such as a bull or a lamb, or a goat...But here the author of Hebrews tells us that not any sacrifice would due for God...Something far different had to be used for all the sins that had been committed in the world, and for all the new sins that will happen in the future...Here the author says, that it is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away man's sins...Therefore, when Jesus came into the world, He said that God did not want sacrifice and offering you did not desire, like had been taking place, but a body You prepared for Me; with burnt offerings and sin offerings You were not pleased...Then Jesus said, ‘Here I AM—it is written about Me in the scroll—I have come to do Your will, My God.’”...And with these thoughts, let us confess our sins to God, who gave us His Son...
Priests in the past had made sacrifice after sacrifice to rid people of their sins...But the sins of man remained...They remained until an Ultimate Sacrifice could be made...So when this Great Priest had offered for all time One Sacrifice for sins, He sat down after His death at the right hand of God...And since that time Jesus waits for His enemies to be made His footstool...For by this One Sacrifice of God's Son, God has made perfect forever those who are being made holy...The Holy Spirit also testifies to us about this...First the Holy Spirit says: “This is the covenant I will make with them after that time, says the LORD I will put My laws in their hearts, and I will write them on their minds.”...Then the Holy Spirit adds: “Their sins and lawless acts I will remember no more.”...And where these have been forgiven, sacrifice for sin is no longer necessary...The use of sacrifice for the Hebrews and Jewish people were over, the Ultimate Sacrifice for our sins was done by God's One and Only Son, Jesus Christ...
In these verses of Hebrews, the author speaks of God, Jesus, and the Holy Spirit at work in the atonement of our sins...That is and was God's Plan...So Jesus was substituted in our sinful place and died for us, and thus died for our sins...His death paid our sin penalty...A God-Type-Man would sacrifice Himself to save the world and be our Savior...We see the Trinity at work here in our atonement...And that we need Someone Divine to help us with our sins...This payment, this atonement for our sins would be Jesus' Life on the cross, and that type sacrifice would settle our sin debt once and for all...
How can no man, but only a God-Type-Man, make atonement for each and every man's sins...In the past God had allowed the different sacrifices for our sins...As one looks at the world, we can see that this sin debt has created an imbalance in the moral universe; God cannot simply ignore it according to one of our Saints, St. Anselm...In the writings of St. Anselm, the Saint says (in summary) that atonement for sins cannot be effected, except the price paid to God for the sin of man be something greater than all the universe besides God...Moreover, it is necessary that he who can give God anything of his own which is more valuable than all things in the possession of God, must be greater than all else but God Himself...Therefore none but God can make this satisfaction of atonement....But none but a man ought to do this, other wise man does not make the satisfaction.... If it be necessary, therefore, as it appears, that the Heavenly Kingdom be made up of men, and this cannot be effected unless the aforesaid satisfaction be made, which none but God can make and none but man ought to make, it is necessary for the God‑Man to make it...
These thoughts on atonement of St. Anselm are summed up by Philosopher William Craig James, in this question of sacrifice and what is the proper payment for man's sins...James states "As St. Anselm says, the answer is, Only God Himself...Therefore, the incarnation of the second person of the Trinity is necessary if anyone is to be saved...“If it be necessary, therefore,...that the heavenly kingdom be made up of men, and this cannot be effected unless the aforesaid satisfaction be made, which none but God can make and none but man ought to make, it is necessary for the God-Man to make it”...
The Old Testament Psalmist told us to acknowledge our sins to God and do not cover up our my iniquities...So say, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD.”...And you Father forgave the guilt of my sin...St. Paul wrote something similar to the Romans...He teaches us to confess our sins to God...If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is LORD,” and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved...For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved."...
God has give us His Son as a Savior and let us confess that He is, because salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved...
