The Boston Chamber Music Society presents an all‑French program for its January concert. Debussy once remarked that his Première Rhapsodie for Clarinet and Piano “is one of the most pleasing I have ever written.” This kaleidoscopic work explores the clarinet’s full range of timbres, offering an ever‑shifting soundscape of techniques, articulations, and registers.
Passionate and lyrical themes unfold within the lush textures of Fauré’s Piano Quartet in G minor. Of particular note is the Adagio, where the piano’s tolling, bell‑like opening sets a dreamlike atmosphere for the viola’s plaintive solos.
The program concludes with Messiaen’s monumental Quartet for the End of Time, one of the most significant works to emerge from World War II. Comprising eight movements inspired by passages from the Book of Revelation, the piece showcases the musical innovations that would define Messiaen’s style—his radical treatment of rhythm and his incorporation of birdsong.
