Saturday, October 25 12:30-3:30 pm
With the guidance of two Boston by Foot docents, we will explore the rich, complex history of Boston's Jewish community in the Grove Hall and Elm Hill neighborhoods of Roxbury. Spanning from 1900 until the early 1960s, this tour delves into the role of key institutions and explores daily life by looking at synagogues, homes, schools, and a bustling shopping district. We’ll also examine the unique intersection of Jewish and Black communities in the neighborhood, and the evolvig social, economic, and cultural dynamics that shaped these vibrant neighborhoods. Through the stories of influential Jewish leaders, community organizers, and ordinary residents, we will learn about the human side of these historical shifts.
The adventure begins at noon with lunch at The Haven in JP. From there, we will drive to the tour's launch point, leaving some cars at the beginning of the tour and some at the end. The tour lasts 90 minutes and covers one mile.
The cost is $19 per person, with a maximum of 15 people, so BOLLI members only during the first round of signups. If there is capacity, we will open the tour to partners and friends of BOLLI members. Please contact Marsha Semuels mhsemuels@gmail.com for payment and more information.
