Whether you have visited previously or this is your first time, the Addison Gallery of American Art is an amazing museum. Located on the fringe of the Phillips Academy in Andover, this gem has among its holdings nine Turners, a unique collection of photographs and a changing range of intriguing exhibits.
For this visit, with the guidance of a docent, we will visit the nine Sargent paintings as well as two special exhibits: Making Their Way: the Florida Highwaymen Painters and Captive Lands. Please read below to learn more about these exhibits, which profile art by African Americans at a pivotal time in history.
There is no cost for this tour. Car pooling will be available. The group will lunch together at a nearby restaurant.
The Florida Highwaymen Painters displays work from 25 loosely affiliated African American artists 1950-1980 who built and sold their vivid and expressive tropical scenes out of the trunks of their cars and door-to door--many have seen their works skyrocket in popularity over recent decades. Below are some of the art on display from this exhibit.
Captive Lands examines what it has meant to "capture the landscape" in an exhibition built from American art works from the Addison's permanent collection. It looks at how the landscape has been romanticized, exploited, celebrated, commercialized and conquered.
