We've arranged a house tour of the intriguing and beautiful Beauport: Sleeper McCann House in Gloucester for 11 am on Friday, October 3rd.
A National Historic Landmark and Historic New England home that was built in 1907, this estate on the water overlooking Gloucester Harbor was the summer home of one of America's first interior designers, Henry Davis Sleeper. Sleeper was a collector and antiquarian. The house has 40 rooms and each is uniquely decorated based on a historical or literary figure, theme, color, shape or object. It has been maintained in Sleeper's style after it was acquired by the McCann family.
The hour-long tour will reveal Sleeper's story and that of his housekeeper and many neighbors and guests (Isabel Stewart Gardner among them) during a very colorful time. The tour is $22 per person pre-paid. Weather permitting, we will spend time in the gardens after the tour. Lunch for our group will take place at a nearby restaurant.
