We are headed to Wellesley College on May 23 to visit the newly reopened Davis Museum. The museum spans four floors and includes a permanent collection of some 11,000 objects, as well as space for temporary exhibitions and programs. This visit will feature the work of Lorraine Grady (see below). Leading our private tour is Dr. Semente, the curator for education. The group will be having lunch at 11:00 am at a nearby restaurant prior to the tour. There are ample opportunities for parking near the museum, which you can read about lower on this page. Please contact Elaine Dratch edratch@aol.com to reserve your space. Voluntary contributions to the museum will be collected at the tour.
About the Museum Modeled after the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Davis's collection dates back to the College's founding in 1875. The founding director began a campaign to acquire original paintings, drawings, prints, and photographs, as well as plaster casts of classical sculpture, in service of a liberal arts education for women. The collections received a huge boost in 1993, when the Davis Museum and Cultural Center opened its doors in a new building designed by Pritzker Architecture Prize winner, Rafael Moneo. This facility, Moneo’s first North American commission, immediately distinguished the Davis among its academic museum peers, and among the art museums and cultural institutions of the Greater Boston area.
In the town of Wellesley, just west of Newton, the Davis Museum is situated within Wellesley College's campus. Free parking, open to all, can be found at the Visitor Parking Facility. The parking is a 2 to 3 minute traverse on a paved path from the parking garage to the museum. Please use Davis Parking Facility and 106 Central Street, Wellesley MA 02481 in your search engine of choice to identify your best route.
