The Massachusetts State House, designed by architect Charles Bulfinch, was completed in January 1798. One of the oldest state capitols in current use, it is considered a masterpiece of Federal architecture and among Bulfinch's finest works. It has been designated a National Historic Landmark for its architectural significance.
The Boston Athenæum, founded in 1807, is a combination of library, museum, and cultural center housed in a National Historic Landmark building. One of the country’s oldest and most distinguished independent libraries, the Atheneum houses a circulating collection of over half a million books, from works published in the 1800s to the latest best sellers. Special collections include active research holdings of 100,000 rare books, maps and manuscripts, and 100,000 works of art, from paintings and sculpture to prints and photographs. The Atheneum sponsors a year-round schedule of cultural programming that includes author talks, book clubs, exhibitions, concerts, social gatherings, and opportunities for connection.
