Torrent

Rocket Storm Incoming!

The Torrent is the Artillery unit of the Confederation forces, what it lacks in general movement speed and range when deployed it easily makes up in raw damage output.

Strengths

  • Highest range out of all Confederation units on land excluding Typhoons

  • Extremely high potential damage output depending on how many rockets connect with the enemy

  • Very difficult to push towards when used in a defensive manner as one good salvo can cripple entire armies

  • Effective at forcing enemies to either run away or take bad fights, also works wonders against Chameleon pushes if you know where to roughly aim them at manually

Weaknesses

  • Less range, longer reload time and less direct damage compared to the the Resistance counterpart

  • Completely helpless against air and units at closer ranges

  • Needs to be micromanaged to get maximum efficiency as they only target what is closest to them automatically, meaning they can get baited into wasting their salvos

  • Very low survivability, speed and very costly to field

How to use

Torrents are by nature more defensively oriented units, as their attack range, rate of fire and accuracy is much worse compared to the Resistance's Mammoth. However these downsides get offset by its ability to fire a large number of rockets towards a targeted position which deal massive splash damage to anything in the area, making them a good addition for either defensive playstyles, slow pushing scenarios or when dealing against units inside the Chameleon's fog.

They should never be used on their own though. It's important to use either Heavy Assault, defense buildings like Bunker and Rocket Tower or Zeus to keep enemies at a distance from them to prevent them from being attacked directly.

Ideally, you want to use Torrents whenever you can pin your enemy into a position where they either have to fight or cannot move away in time to deal massive splash damage to anything caught up in one salvo. Alternatively, they can be used to siege bases from a semi-safe distance, but keep in mind that Sniper Towers or Mammoths still outrange them and that you have to be considerably close to the enemy forces to do so which makes them difficult to protect (Tier 3 units have pretty high range themselves). Not to mention that even a single Albatross bombing attack can prove fatal to them.

Also, keep in mind that force firing with your units does reveal them from inside the Fog of War. So unless a unit can't be targeted due to for example being hidden inside a Chameleon fog or if one tries to predict their movement while shooting, it's better to simply manually target a unit. Not to mention that this gives a good opportunity for Hawks to target the Torrents as well.

It is possible to find some older game footage that says the exact opposite. The reason for that is simply, that originally, force firing did not reveal a unit, but it was removed to keep Seraphim and Leviathan from being invulnerable while shooting from hills.
