Thor

Strikes them where it hurts

Thor specializes in dealing huge splash damage in a decent sized area, making it perfect for crushing ground armies that aren't prepared for it.

Strengths

  • High damage

  • Huge splash damage area

  • Very fast unit

  • Strong Armor and Defense

  • Can attack hidden units because it doesn't need to target them

Weaknesses

  • Vulnerable without support units

  • Long time between bombing runs

  • Decreased attack frequency the further away from the Airfield the targets are

  • Can't directly target enemies, making it difficult to use against moving targets

How to use

Thor is a late game unit first available at HQ4 requiring huge time and resource investments to use. It is also not advised to use Thor without support from Vertex or Zeus to cover for them having to refuel after each bombing run. Bombers are the only offensive units that can't directly target an enemy, forcing the player to always manually choose their bombing area. This also means that fast moving units can avoid its attack by moving out of the way in time.

The intended use for Thors is to send them into the enemy base to bomb and destroy important enemy buildings for which at least 3 Thor at a time should be used (the more the better). To reduce the overall damage taken by Thors from enemy Anti-Air Tower, it is generally advised to send in all available Thors at the same time. This will also increase the chance of destroying buildings without giving the enemy time to repair them.

It's also worth noting that usually 2 Thor are required to destroy a 2x2 building and 3 Thor are required to destroy a 3x3 building in one bombing run when the enemy has upgraded their buildings, which notably is often not the case especially at low ranks requiring even less bombers to destroy them. The opposite can also be true though, especially if the enemy decides to use Air-Raid boosts which reduce all damage done by avia by up to 20%. So these values should be seen more as a guideline than anything as they will differ in each battle.

Level 3 production buildings also tend to have much higher survivability than other 3x3 buildings, so in such cases, bombing with 4 Thors is recommended.

The best targets to bomb tend to be the Space System, Nuclear Launcher or production buildings as they can't be rebuilt easily by using a boost. Airfields can also be good targets, but if the enemy sees the bombers coming (i.e. through the use of infantry hidden in forests) then it is very likely that the attack will fail, as both Hawk and especially Vertex are a hard counter to bombers, of which 4 of them are often enough to kill a Thor in 1 salvo. Not to mention that they can attack your bombers multiple times due to their superior speed.

When choosing the area for Thors to bomb, a red line with arrows will be shown, which indicates the flight path taken by them to attack their target. There is also an outline on the map and mini-map itself which shows the exact flight path. In most cases, it is recommended to let them bomb sideways as this will decrease their exposure time to Anti-Air Towers. This might delay their arrival on top of the target, but will also shorten the path back to the airfield, therefore giving fighter jets less of a chance to harass them.

Besides going after buildings, it's also possible to target units if they don't run away in time. As a general rule, bombers become much more efficient against closer targets, due to them always starting from and returning to the Airfield after the bombing, because this will result in shorter flight times, less fuel usage and therefore less refueling time, effectively increasing their attack frequency and reducing the chance of enemies running away in time because the delay between attack command and actual attack gets reduced significantly.

These mechanics make them a great counter to Chameleon and sieged up units like Mammoth.

Furthermore, Thors can be used to tank for Vertexes, by letting them fly into the enemy Anti-Air Towers just before the Vertexes arrive because they have far superior health and armor. Air defenses also deal noticeably less damage against Thor thanks to their tier 3 armor making them even better for this purpose.

At lower ranks, the fuel consumption upgrades for the Thor are insufficient for it not to use up all fuel mid-flight when bombing at a bigger distance. This doesn't destroy them though but gives them a -20% movement speed debuff until they are refueled again.
