The Confederation heavy infantry support vehicle, armed with both a Heavy Machine Gun and Flamethrower which pack a bigger punch than their infantry counterparts while maintaining a very high degree of survivability at the cost of mobility. It has the ability to detect and clear landmines.
The Fortress excels in defending vital positions near your base in the early game and in decimating any and all infantry that gets close enough to be in range of the flamethrower. Due to the Heavy Machine Gun being only marginally stronger than the rifles Assaults use, their main source of damage output comes from the flamethrower.
It’s main purpose lies mostly within the early game as a support vehicle for your own infantry and Hammers, as its lack of anti-tank capabilities and mobility make it very ineffective against both armored and faster units.
It can also be used to fight for big containers in the early game, as the container radius is small enough to force even much faster units to fight it up close. Its high armor also allows blocking the container collection until other units like Hammer, Cyclone or Cerberus can arrive and take over.
Its other purpose lies in being a mine detector which will drastically reduce its movement speed while active, but allows it to detect mines in a rather large radius and disable them safely by moving on top of them for a time. Keep in mind that the mine can explode if the fortress is being hit with explosives while in the middle of disarming it or if you give it a new order while the mine is still being defused, so only go for the disable if you are confident enough to do it uncontested, or alternatively blow the mines up manually by force firing at them with your tanks.
Extremely durable due to having T3 armor
Very deadly against infantry and light vehicles at close range
Enemies must focus their attacks on it first if they are reliant on infantry so they don’t risk losing a large group at once
The only Confederation vehicle that can detect mines directly
The Heavy Machine Gun can attack Helicopters, but don’t expect too much
Very low movement speed and effective range
Can be overwhelmed by infantry in large enough numbers before it can use the flamethrower
Very expensive to build in mass early on
Using them as mine detectors tends to get them killed for free in the late game
The Heavy Machine Gun has a low damage output and fairly bad accuracy
