SPRING INTENSIVE COURSE

HOW TO APPLY

Dear 2Ls,

I'm delighted to announce that I will be offering my Spring Term experiential learning Oceans Law & Policy course this coming May! The course will have two components: 1) an online learning module that will be available early May that will involve pre-recorded lectures and a three hour virtual exercise session (you will be able to complete this while working); and 2) a 7 day trip to the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre (BMSC) on Vancouver Island (May 14-21). While at BMSC we get to do on the land and on the water learning and I will introduce you to the intersection of marine science and oceans law in addition to a suite of other applied learning experiences.

This year I have capacity to take 20 students

The virtual info session will be Friday, February 23, from 12-1pm on Google Meet: meet.google.com/rzb-ahtc-xav

The application process is as follows:

Please submit directly to me at cameronj@ualberta.ca your CV, unofficial transcript, and maximum 1-page statement of interest (why you want to take this course). I reserve the right to schedule virtual interviews with applicants if I have any questions or concerns. Priority will be given to students who have taken international and/or environmental courses and then to those who can demonstrate a passion for this area of law. The deadline for submitting your application is 4 PM on February 29th. I will select students in early March, at which point we will schedule an in-person information session for those who have been selected.

I am happy to answer any questions via email in advance as you prepare your applications.

In previous years there has been some funding available to participants. Please stay tuned as I work with the admin team to determine if this will be available this year.

This course is by far my teaching highlight and those who have taken it in the past have expressed to me that it is one of their highlights of law school. I hope to have the same experience this May!

For those of you who are not familiar with Bamfield and BMSC, here is a link to the centre: https://bamfieldmsc.com/

This course is expected to be graded on a pass/fail (CR/NC) basis pending Law Faculty Council confirmation in March 2024. Students can consult the Course Registration Manual for information on how CR/NC grading affects eligibility for prizes and awards.
