Gladue Seminar & Externship

The Faculty of Law, in collaboration with Alberta Justice, offers a 3 credit experiential learning

opportunity in criminal sentencing law for 2L and 3L students. It will be offered again in January

2020. The seminar in 2019 will be led by Dr. Hadley Friedland, Marshall Hopkins, Criminal

Lawyer Hopkins MacLeod, and Externship Coordinator Notasha Lake, Provincial Gladue Report

Coordinator. Support and training for the course is being provided by various justice system

stakeholders, including Yellowhead Tribal Community Corrections, Native Counselling Services

of Alberta, and members of the judiciary and Alberta bar.


The course is designed to provide law students with a deeper and critical understanding of the

legal, social, cultural and economic contexts for implementing Gladue principles, including the

relevance of individual social and historic factors, the TRC final report, and the relationship of

Gladue principles to Indigenous laws, Indigenous healing and ceremonial processes and

restorative justice practices. Students will participate in a pre-externship training session,

attend bi- weekly seminars and complete 20-35 hours assisting Gladue report writers interview,

gather and provide information for justices of the Court of Queen’s Bench and Provincial Court

of Alberta in Edmonton.


Students will not be involved in giving legal advice to clients, will be required to maintain

confidentiality, and will not speak directly to sentencing unless compelled by the court.

Acceptance in the course is through application and interview process only. Interested

students are encouraged to attend the information session. All interviews will be scheduled for

April 15, 2019.

• A letter of intent, addressed to “Gladue Course Instructors,” outlining why you are

interested in this clinical program, as well as any related background and experience,

• A curriculum vitae, as well as

• Unofficial law transcripts (as available, may be submitted late for first year students).
