COURSE DESCRIPTION

Increased attention to pressing social issues like economic inequality and the climate crisis has led to a renewed interest in political economy. Political economy as an approach understands the “economic” and “political” domains of social life as being inextricably linked. In this course we will examine the role of law in constituting these domains.  We will read and discuss literature in legal theory which: rejects the idea of “law” as an autonomous domain; puts pressure on the “public/private” divide in legal fields; and interrogates the normative premises of certain dominant modes of legal analysis.
