COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will introduce students to theoretical approaches to animal and environmental law.  Specific topics may include legal personhood for animals and natural objects; the place of animals in Indigenous and colonial legal orders; the relationship between animal law and environmental law; earth jurisprudence; Third World Approaches to International Law (TWAIL); environmental justice; ecofeminism; and queer ecology.  Students will be expected to participate thoughtfully and respectfully in class discussion of the assigned readings and to submit at least five (5) response papers (approximately 1,000 words each) over the course of the semester.
