COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course will provide students with an opportunity to: delve deeper into the principles of administrative law; and develop practical skills including their written and oral advocacy.  By the end of the course, students will have a greater understanding of administrative law topics including the Rule of Law, the Court’s role in reviewing government action, prerogative writs and administrative remedies, the Standard of Review, the Duty of Fairness, statutory interpretation, and the role of independent counsel.

Each class will be divided into three activities: student-led presentation of specific caselaw and academic articles; seminar style lectures on select topics in administrative law; and exercises to develop practical advocacy skills.

The course will follow a professional discipline matter through an administrative hearing process, culminating in a moot appeal.  Students will have the opportunity to: practice making interlocutory applications, draft both a short brief of law and a Factum, and present oral argument before an appellate body.
