COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course provides an introduction to the nature of oil and gas and the legal consequences of the ways in which oil and gas have been characterised by the courts. It considers the methods by which rights to explore for and to produce oil and gas are acquired under private leases and dispositions by the province and the federal government. It will include an examination of the nature of royalties in Canadian law. The course will survey other legal instruments commonly employed in the energy industry and explore the nature of aboriginal interests in oil and gas.
