COURSE DESCRIPTION


This course will examine the special duties and responsibilities of lawyers acting in leadership roles, as well as the challenges and opportunities of leadership generally. Leadership theory and case studies will offer the opportunity for students to consider styles of leadership, values, and approaches that will permit them to develop effective leadership skills and apply leadership principles, strategies and techniques to their own careers and lives. The class will also consider leadership challenges for lawyers in different contexts. Depending upon student interest and the availability of guest speakers, topics may include: diversity and gender issues in leadership; cognitive bias; conflict management techniques; professional responsibilities for lawyers in non-legal roles; corporate counsel; military lawyering; lawyers as government leaders; leadership in literature and film.
