COURSE DESCRIPTION

This seminar will introduce students to core texts, schools of thought, and historic and ongoing debates within feminist legal theory.  Students will also explore the impact of feminist legal theory on legal argument and judicial reasoning in Canada.  Intellectual traditions covered will include liberal legal feminism, radical feminism, cultural feminism, postmodern feminism, postcolonial feminism, intersectional and critical race feminism, Indigenous feminism, LGBTQ2S+ feminism, and internal critiques of feminist legal theory.  Substantive topics may include legal approaches to the family, paid and unpaid labour, discrimination, sexual harassment, abortion, pornography, gender-based violence, sexual assault and rape.  Students enrolling should be aware that this course will cover difficult topics that may have challenging personal resonances for other students, or for themselves.  We will strive to create a safe and respectful classroom space for all students.
