My work in this class shows my strengths of creating a character and following a theme, but also my weakness of finishing things in on time or even finishing them at all. I created the first clown project in 2D design and kept making projects with him and other clowns. The clowns each have their own names and I've also managed to connect them to other things that I've come up with in the past, such as the magic chicken army. My biggest weakness is definitely finishing projects in on time. The only projects that I finished on time this semester were the first paper sculpture and the last sustained investigation. I find it hard to work on projects at home or in art class because I get distracted easily, so I ended up getting most of my work done in study hall at the end of the semester. I think another one of my weakness is probably experimenting with materials and new ideas, because I did a lot of sewing for my sustained investigations, and I also struggled with thinking of a theme for my sustained investigations and what projects I could do that matched the theme. Personally I think the inquiry of my sustained investigation makes sense, but it's too wordy and specific. Something else that I struggle with is certain materials. I got ideas for the paper sculptures and relief project, but I ended up not liking what I was working on or even completing them. Clay, fabric, and wire are other materials that I definitely prefer, and my favorite projects are made of those materials.
I think my work shows that I have improved because of how I was able to create a lot more projects that I actually liked the end result of, and I was able to figure out that 3D work is something that I prefer over 2D. I think the range of what i've done in terms of size has also improved, because I've made smaller projects and larger ones. Also, the quality of the work has just improved. My first paper sculpture is pretty plain, the tape is still visible, and it doesn't really show much. My later projects, such as the first sustained investigation are much more interesting.
The most challenging project for me was the alginate hands project. The relief project was also challenging because I couldn't think of a good idea and I never finished it, but the alginate hands is definitely the hardest one that I finished. I like how it turned out, but it was nothing like my original idea and just getting there was difficult. I had a design idea originally, but when I took the hands home to work on them I just left them on my desk for three days because I didn't know how to start. I ended up deciding to add clowns, but my original plan of how I was going to draw them didn't work, and I kept changing my materials for surfacing. I did end up coming up with an idea that I stuck with, but my procrastination is what made this project the hardest.
My favorite project is between the clown army, the murder mystery clown, and the sgraffito sculpture. I really like my sgraffito sculpture because it turned out different from what I originally wanted, but better. I like scraffito, but I'm actually glad that it got too dry and allowed me to try something different on clay. Using watercolor paint on clay looks really cool, and I'm adding that on to one of my sculptures in ceramics as well. I also really like the murder mystery clown because it's the largest clown I've ever made, and they way the large plaster hand fits in with it looks super cool. 3D objects already have perspective depending on how you look at them , but I wanted to try and force perspective and make it seem like the hand was being shoved in your face. I don't know if it actually worked exactly how I wanted, but it still fits the absurdity of the final piece. The clown army is another one of my favorites because I made multiple and they're small and funny. Attaching magnets to them was a good idea.
My artistic goals for the future are to keep doing art and go to an art school. I really want to go to school in London, because I actually really like cities and it's the coolest one that I've ever been to. Everything in London has low acceptance rates though, so I have to start doing more art outside of school over the summer and in my last two years in highschool. They also want you to have high math and english grades, so I need to not fail math anymore as well. I think that this course and ceramics has helped me realize that I like 3D art more than 2D. I also hadn't sewn in a while before starting this course, but it reminded me that I really like sewing. I think that it's definitely something I will continue doing, especially because I also want to start making my own clothes. Overall, I will definitely continue with art and keep trying to figure out which techniques are my favorite.
