Artist Statement: Mt. Desert Island

In seventh grade, I went on a school trip to the Schoodic Peninsula in Acadia National Park. During the trip, we went for a hike up a mountain and I took a picture of Mount Desert Island in the distance. This charcoal and ink drawing is based after that photo I took.

For materials, I used a 2H graphite drawing pencil to make a grid pattern on the sheet of pastel paper to split up the drawing. For the sky and ocean, I used a mixture of India ink and water to make a gray color. For the rest of the drawing, which included Mount Desert Island, the mountain I am standing on, and some other small islands, I used charcole and white charcole pencils so I could get more detail in.

My favorite part of this piece is the first tall tree on the left. I feel that it a god representation of what I wanted the rest of the drawing to have turned out to be. My least favorite part of this drawing was the forest on the mountain I a standing on. I have always know that I am terrible at drawing with charcole and this just further proves my skill with charcole is not great. What I would change about this drawing is that I would have made it out of graphite instead. Overall, I am not too pleased on how this piece turned out mainly because it doesn't look like I put very much effort in even though I did.
