Artist Statement:

For this piece I really wanted to use the background more either representational or as something to further the story. I decided to choose a dark character from the fairy tale Rose Red and Snow White and he was an evil dwarf that constantly insulted the girls even though they had done nothing wrong. I did end up using the background to display the dwarf's overall demeanor and to set a mood for what type of character he was.

For materials I used graphite pencil for the sketching, two different sizes of black fine-point pen for the line work and details, and then for the color and the splatters. I found some really nice watercolor paper that was pretty thick in my house that I used and I definetly will use it again because of how nicely it carried the paint.

I started by reading the Snow White and Rose Red fairy tale and pulling as much description of the dwarf as possible. I then did a quick sketch in graphite pencil and black fine point pen with a little bit of marker for the red eyes. When drawing the dwarf on the watercolor paper I almost forgot the beard because I drew a whole bald face to help with the facial structure so I had to erase a lot of detail I had put in when putting in the beard. I had a lot of fun coloring this painting in when mixing colors and applying multiple layers onto the piece. For the background I wanted it to represent the dwarf's dark personality and mood so I made a sort of smokey dark background that when making I accidently splattered some paint over the dwarf and I decided I liked the look so I added more and more and the final result really pleases me.
