Sustained Investigation #1

Tom Thumb

Materials: Graphite pencil, colored pencil, black fine point pen, black brush pen, on watercolor paper

Size: 11" x 15"

Artist Statement:

For this piece I chose do draw the character Tom Thumb from the folktale of the same name. I tried to display scale in this piece and because Tom is the size of a thumb I had to depict him surrounding by things we already know the size of. I decided to depict him riding a mouse, which is mentioned in the story, while weilding a needle as a sword, which was also in the story.

For materials I used a hard graphite pencil for the sketch and did linework with a black fine point pen. To color in the eye I used a black brush pen and to color in the rest of the drawing I used colored pencils.

I strated by going through a fairy tale book that I had and pulling out characters I thought would be interesting to draw. After choosing Tom Thumb I made a sketch of him in my sketch book to visualize how I was going to draw him. I like most of the final result but I feel like from Tom's torso up looks rushed and messy which i am not very happy with.
