School Counselors offer social and emotional support to students and staff. During our PLOs for the 2016-2017 school year, mindfulness was a focus and we worked to implement it in our schools.

Goals: We sought to become informed on the variety of mindfulness practices that can be infused into a school day, both in counseling work and in the classrooms. We hoped to turn key our learning to school staff, support students in developing coping skills for self-regulation, and practice self-care strategies utilizing mindful practices.

Learning: Mindfulness teaches us how to improve our practice as professionals. Before we can implement with students we must practice mindfulness for ourselves. Through mindfulness we learn compassion, understanding, boundaries, attention, intention and authenticity.

Implementation of Techniques and Practices: Mindfulness can be implemented through books, activities, deep breathing, yoga and guided meditation. It can be used individually, in small groups or whole class.

Impact: Educators have described positive learning outcomes by incorporating mindfulness activities into their school day. Students also state they feel calmer and more able to concentrate on schoolwork. Mindfulness contributes to a classroom environment that is other-centered and respectful of the culture of the school community.

Conclusion: Mindfulness practices in school enhance academic learning, and help students to be more kind, compassionate, less stressed individuals.

Next Steps: Attend PLOs during the 2017-2018 school year. Plan professional development for school based staff.
