PLO Attended:

  • Integrated Co-Teaching Six Models to Support Student Success

Coached by:

  • Lisa Velazquez

PLO LEARNINGS:

· Building a strong relationship and shared value among co-teachers

· Deepen knowledge of six co-teaching models to strategically.

· Implement one or more models to meet the needs of all students.

· Strategically co-plan utilizing elements of effective lesson planning to impact implementation to target student needs.

IMPLEMENTATION OF TECHNIQUES & PRACTICES:

Prior the attending our PLO, we mainly relied on the “parallel teaching” and “one teach, one assist” models of co-teaching. Following the PLO, we integrated parallel teaching into our math workshop. We also added alternative teaching, team teaching, and station teaching. We tried out each of these models in our reading, writing, math, science, and social studies workshops, depending on the learning target and the needs of our students. Lisa Velazquez, one of our PLO facilitators, also conducted to follow-up visits to observe our co-teaching practice and provide feedback, which we’ve worked to implement.

IMPACT and DATA:

The six different co-teaching models has had a great impact on our teaching. For starters, there is an increased adult attention to scholars and higher scholar engagement from reducing the teacher-to-student ratio. There is a shared expertise among us. In addition, there is a greater level of shared responsibility for instruction and management. Co-teaching also allows us an increased opportunity to differentiate scholar needs and a greater social integration among scholar sub-groups. After implementing co-teaching models in math, we have observed an increase in student achievement as measured by the i-Ready math diagnostic tests. Students showed an average 6 point growth on our i-Ready math diagnostic from fall to winter administrations (prior to attending the PLO). From winter to spring, student scores increased an average of 16 points, a 167% increase compared to the first administration.

NEXT STEPS:

We would like to gather more data from across subject areas to assess the impact of different teaching models. We would also like to integrate team teaching and station teaching more often. Finally, we would like to deepen our co-planning practice.
