Position/Title: Literacy Coach

Name of School: I.S. 143 Eleanor Roosevelt

DBN: 06M143 Superintendent: Manuel Ramirez

Personal Statement: I have spent my entire career in the vibrant neighborhood of Washington Heights, working as an ESL teacher and librarian for most of my 25 years at I.S. 143. It has been my privilege to serve as literacy coach for the past four years, a position in which I collaborate with hardworking teachers committed to refining their practice and increasing student success. Among my goals is to empower students to actively engage with any manner of text. The ability to interact with ideas on a page can liberate readers to imagine and forge new possibilities for themselves and their world. In my opinion, the words of Frederick Douglass capture the power of literacy best: “Once you learn to read, you will be forever free.”
