PLO Abstract:

The Gramercy Arts HS participated to a citywide initiative of Race Against Waste that was focused on Service-Learning principles. The PLO requires the co-facilitators to attend a series of three workshops sponsored by Service in Schools and Office of Sustainability. These workshops helped and guided our school green team to create and promote initiatives aimed to improve school recycling habits and education of paper waste that goes to the landfill. During a six week period, we tracked contamination in paper recycling bins in our school and made efforts to reduce contamination. The goal was to reduce contamination in the paper recycling bins by 90-95% by May.Not only did we achieve our goal, but we also gained valuable information about proper recycling, the stats on our school’s recycling habits, and how we can improve our school’s waste habits in the future.
