Exhibited by Barry: Increasing Comprehension by Creating More Engaged Readers
Position/Title: S.E.T.S.S. provider
Name of School: Jacob August Riis
DBN: 02M126 Superintendent: Bonnie Laboy
Personal Statement: I have been a teacher at PS 126 / M.A.T. for 22 years. The first 18 years of my career were spent as a special education teacher in I.C.T. classrooms. For the past 3 years, I have been a S.E.T.S.S. provider in grades 3rd through 7th. I work with students that receive S.E.T.S.S., E.N.L. students and at-risk students in both small group and whole class lessons. Many of my students are decoding the text, but not completely understanding and interpreting the text correctly. I thought the best way to increase comprehension, would be to increase student engagement with the text. This year, I was lucky enough to work with the MFO to learn new techniques to create more engaged readers with the goal of increasing their comprehension.
