Building Futures Together
Dear colleagues,
It's hard to believe that it is week 5 already and I want to share our thanks for a positive and focused first half of term. Pulling together on uniform, phone and general expectations is making a positive difference to general standards. I know it is not always easy, but it is definitely worth it. Thank you!
Learning, Teaching & Assessment
We have a massive investment into Learning & Teaching this week. We are delighted to be working with Mark Burns from Osiris. We have asked Mark to create a similar session to the one delivered to PTs in June, this time aimed at teaching staff. In order that discussions can focus in subject contexts, David has kindly set up input accordingly. This hasn't been easy but I am confident it will be very helpful.
The purpose of the session is to consider how we best make judgements, assess and feedback. I have made Mark ware of our position with regard to the new tracking system and hope that the input and discussions will help support your team's approach.
David has automatically put the cover in for staff at the relevant times but understandably asks that staff minimise other cover requests for those two days as it is unlikely cover will be available. Sessions are scheduled as follows:
Wed 1 & 2 - Endrick 1
Wed 3 & 4 - Lomond 1
Wed 5 & 6 - Lomond 2
Thu 1 & 2 - Endrick 2 and Expressive Arts
Thu 3 & 4 - Campsie 2 and Flexible Learning
Thu 5 & 6 - Campsie 1
Raising Attainment & Achievement - next steps
There was some rich conversation at Team Meetings about how we target young people. Given the three year declining trend in 5@ level 6, it is important that our focus is on those most at risk.
Focused & Targeted Interventions
I ask that class teachers keep a closer eye on those highlighted (red, amber or blue) in this spreadsheet.
In addition, it has been great to see some teams organise the peer support from S6 available to support younger pupils. It would be a positive use of pupil resource to partner those S6 with strong attainment at N5 and Higher with targeted pupils.
Again, if you would like to make use of out of school support, liaise with your PT and they can complete the Supported Study Request Form outlining the plan and target pupils. I will quickly get back to you with a response. Thanks in advance for offering this. This is for targeted pupils only.
Thanks again for your hard work and professionalism. Have a great week.
Elaine

Higher D&M - Dyson Case Study
Thanks to Rachel for sharing this short video of senior pupils taking apart Dyson’s tangle-free turbine tool as part of a case study (some of the class were in Barcelona!) They’re analysing each component to identify the materials, manufacturing processes, and assembly methods used in its design.
Thanks to the Dyson Foundation, we’ve been lucky enough to get one of their engineering boxes free of charge for a month — complete with a Dyson cordless vacuum for hands-on product analysis. So, if you spot us vacuuming around the atrium, don’t be alarmed — it’s all in the name of engineering! 😂
Congratulations to Neil Macquarrie, Neil Thomson (Active Stirling), the PE Team and wider staff who contribute to PE and sport across the school. We have achieved the Sport Scotland Gold Award three times and are working towards the 4th. The work done in Balfron has been highlighted as excellent practice and it has been an honour to be identified as the school to promote the award on behalf of Sport Scotland. You may have seen cameras in school on Thursday. This involved interviews with young people and staff. A particular well done is due to George Thompson who is going to be prominently featured in Sport Scotland promo videos. I will share the final pieces when complete. In the meantime, watch this space!
The award assesses 8 areas of practice and provides a helpful vehicle for meaningful self evaluation and planning. These are the areas:
School Sport
Physical Education
Clubs and Communities
Competitive Opportunities
Celebrating Sport
Developing our Pupils
Developing our Deliverers
Recognising our People
We have a planned and proactive Sports Council and Sports Ambassadors who work closely with staff in the self evaluation and decision making processes. A great model that could be applied in contexts across the school.
