Weekly communication for staff

Dear colleagues,

I am really looking forward to seeing the Humanutopia input on Tuesday. There is a video link below that gives an outline of what to expect. The aims of the session are:

  • To provide an opportunity for all students to reflect on their past and consider why and who they have become today.

  • To provide a warm and psychologically safe environment for young people to express themselves about the struggles and challenges they have faced.

  • To encourage the students to work collaboratively in small groups in order to present a positive social experience with students outside their friendship circles.

  • To challenge young people to ask if and how they can make positive changes to improve their lifechances.

  • To inspire the students to aspire to a bigger and brighter future by encouraging them to consider and chase their dreams.

At assemblies, I have been pushing ourthe importance of our school vaules, purpose and rationale of uniform, mobile phone use and the rules around vaping. It would be really helpful if you could reinforce these in your classes. I have told young people to expect to be asked to:

  • remove all outdoor jackets (not blazers)

  • remove non-school uniform items (hoodies, branded sweatshirts)

  • put away phones (a reminder then removed for period)

I have shared the rationale and consequences with pupils and their parents/carers. You can access the policies here. Feel free to show these to pupils again in form time. I hope that the rules are clear. Let's help eachother by reinforcing them.

It was great to meet with pupil councils last week. They were each a motivated and engaged group - we had some good discussion. Two things that would make a big difference to all yeargroups are:

  • access to toilets all floors at appropriate times (now open).

  • supervision of the queues at break and lunchtime.

If you have signed up and have time to help supervise at break and lunch, please do help with the hot food queues and the baked potato/panini queues. These are the lines where pupils skip most. The links to the pupil council notes are with the reps for feeding back at form. I will also make them available below.

Thanks for your help and support in the week to come.

Elaine

S3 Assembly 19052022

This is a link to the assembly that was delivered to young people last week.

The link above was shown to S3 regarding vaping. It raises the dangers for young people.

Toilets are now all open again. Please reinforce that the toilets are being monitored for vaping and grafitti. Further concerns will result in the upper toilets being closed again during class time.

We all need a heart warming message...

It's always lovely to get a not or card as a surprise . This one was particularly heartwarming. When Jacqui was sorting out lockers of the S6 outgoing pupils and getting them ready for the new intake, she found this.... I think we should ask out S6s to do this as a matter of course. What do you think?

Some Highlights from the last week

Here are some of our highlights shared with the wider world on Twitter. It is fantastic to be able to celebrate the achievements and experiences of our young people in a range of ways.

When people outside our building know what we are doing, it gives value to those inside...so let's share and celebrate all that we do.

Never give up an opportunity to share something great about our school.

Our girls did particularly well in football, playing against Bannockburn High.

Congratulations. to our U14s who won the Falkirk 7s.

Thanks to Clair & Karin for their targeted recovery work with senior girls - seen here having managed an escape from the escape rooms!

Great to see Campbell, Lewis, Sam and Chris successfully supporting children at Buchlyvie Primary during their Health Week. They have been working with Neil Thomson as part of the alternative to exam leave programme.

Fanastic to see (and hear) rehearsals of our orchestra in preparation for the summer concert on 15 June. Our primary 7 musicians have been a welcome addition to the group.

More reading at Drymen Primary last week.

Sunday saw a big grouup head to the Etihad Stadium to watch Manchester City play Aston Villa and win the premier title. This was after some training and fun at the academy (below).

CLPL Corner - Leadership

Leadership Reflections

We are all leaders - in the classroom, projects, teams, Houses, Home areas.

Never forget the importance of your job. What ever you do in Balfron High, you have an impact and can make an amazing difference.

I love this (right) from Joe Sanfelippo.

Here is a link to his blog and his regular walk to work leadership challenges. The most recent is don't chase the flies, chase the smiles! Definitely worth a look.

Here's an opportunity for women in education to network. Fillian Hamilton is the keynote speaker.
